SPR10 Since 1982 LP
What a nice name for an LP, not that I’m biased! SPR10 aka Ben Spurr clearly has the year of his birth in their favour, but do they have the skills to back it up? Judging from the press release, clearly a great deal of time and effort has gone into this, but the result is a mixed bag, that often gets a little sour on the pallet.
This LP does have some highlights, such as the beautifully crafted “Where’d You Go?” and the concept track “Ignorant Folk”, with a call and response from the ignorant and the non-ignorant. It is however let down by a slightly monotonous undertone, with the emceeing and production often failing too short to raise your pulse much above that of a brisk walk. The emceeing, whilst often well meaning, is lacking in enough character or variety. When this is duplicated on the production boards, you’re left with a project that fails to stamp any imprint on your consciousness. Despite this, you certainly can’t deny that there are solid tracks on here that will interest people, but whether or not people will be willing to sit through the whole album is another question.
A lot has happened since 1982, but unfortunately you get the distinct feeling that “Since 1982” won’t be one of those musical milestones by which people will judge others. Still, those milestones are classics and whilst this clearly does not fit onto that category, it will still please a few select ears.
