Mr Phormula & Lews Tewns Mr Phormula & Lews Tewns LP
This combo would on the surface appear like your average ‘Producer / Emcee’ duo right. Well, not these Mr Phormula & Lews Tewns, as they both take turns on the mic and behind the boards. In fact, these Welsh fellas appear to have a real handle on both crafts and that’s an impressive skill indeed.
This album is a little ticket into the fairly unchartered Welsh waters for the average Hiphop fan. We’re not talking the relatively known Cardiff / Newport scene either, we are talking representing Wales as a whole including the Welsh speaking minority. Yes there’s rapping in Welsh and it sounds nice although only about 0.1% of the UK population will understand it. Still, there’s not a saturation of the stuff but with tracks like “Tales From Wales” and “Tan Y Ddraig” you don’t have to look far for influence. Yet there’s still plenty of humour and variety, such as the g-funk “I Need My Wellies Right?”, this LP has more to offer than merely patriotism. With production that from dark, dank and depressive, through to jovial, bouncy ditties, you’re certainly taken through a range of emotions on this release. The emceeing is high class as well and with a good selection of guest slots, there’s not much chance of getting bored.
Whether or not the majority of Hiphop fans will be open minded enough to adsorb this kind of thing remains to be seen. It would be a damn shame if it was overlooked though as ultimately this is great Hiphop which can be enjoyed by anyone.
