PYRELLI Vitamin A: A Twist Of Fate LP

I first came across Pyrrelli after booking Sway for a, financially disastrous, live show. The undoubted highlight of the night was Pyrelli; a shapely, insouciant rapper with a smooth flow and tight rhymes

With a rap style born in early 90s’ L.A, yet refined with an Anglo-Caribbean panache, I can honestly say I am taken aback by ‘Vitamin A: A Twist Of Fate’. The sheer size and ambition of some of the tracks - like the haunting ‘Tha Seed’, with its lingering female vocals, and the anthemic ‘Do Not Disturb’. Along with, ‘Twist Of Fate’, which deploys a swaggering G-funk sound coupled with a strong narrative– all strike unexpectedly. To put it simply, no other UK rap act is making music like this right now.

With a throwback style echoing mid-90s’ L.A gangsta rappers; Kurupt, Bone Thugs and even Pac sounding like influences. Still, Pyrelli seems smart enough not to focus on what the Daily Mail, among others, probably dubbed ‘the devils music’ for most of the last decade. ‘Vitamin A: A Twist Of Fate’, also encompasses elements of dancehall, soca, rnb and even pop, a good example being ‘Can’t Be Asked’, with it’s Justin Timberlake/Timberland ‘Sexy Back’ sample, this is a cross-over track in the making.

Having emerged in the shadow of Sway, it could be time for Pyrelli to overtake his good friend in the UK Hip hop limelight.
