 Def Tex Serene Bug LP

A group that’s been working hard for some years now, repping Norwich to the fullest, and probably bar Force 10 the only thing hiphop going on there (Don’t quote me on that). But man have these boys done their hometown some big favours, releasing two great EP’s and now a full length album. What a cracker it is too! Def Tex have never been a group I’ve disliked but at the same time, I’ve never really thought of them as a major player in Hiphop, but this album has fully thrown that on its head. An album that will stand the test of time with its refreshing styles and originality these boys have fully gained my respect.

When you look at the track list you will have seen/heard/own a few of them, but please don’t let that turn you off, as the old and new stuff is all quality. Starting with a classic tune ‘Poetic Speech Techniques’ that for me was centre stage on the Son Records compilation. This tune is mind-blowingly good, and thankfully it sets the scene for other gems to come. ‘Synchronise’ has been out before also, but again a highly strong track. Out of the instant hits you’ve got ‘Fresh Air’ Feat. Ezra (Vinyl Dialect) and Cappo, ‘Into The Future’ and ‘Rock The Beat’ feat. Huntkillbury Finn and Ty. All are instantly enjoyable with a long lasting appeal that will have you still finding it a great listen after the 1000th listen and trust its getting near that for me!

There’s a whole different angle to this album that you really don’t want to overlook. There are tracks that you think ‘Damn that’s nice, but lets just listen to ‘Into The Future’ one more time’. However once you’ve played those tracks enough to satisfy yourself you’ll go back again and realise what you’ve been missing. These tracks aren’t so much as an acquired taste, but more like a food that you kind of like the first time, but after a while your binge eating on it. You’ll listen to them twice, think ‘Yeah nice’ but after the tenth time you’ll be fully getting into them. I found this which such tracks as ‘’North Westerly Winds’ feat. Juice Aleem and ‘I don’t Know’.

This is a truly great hiphop album, one of the best of the year in my view. Its fully well rounded with great production and lyrics. In fact only ‘Hold That Thought’ is not a track that I’d have on the album. Do your self a favour and go buy an album of the year, you’ll not regret it!
