 Ashbury A Dream Indoors LP

Interesting in a non-hiphop type way this. Regular readers will remember Supra in his interview mention Ashbury - "There's also Ashbury - a kind of diversion from hiphop, a full album from this girl called Becky that I know singing, that’s being recorded now and will be on CD".

Well, the said CD has arrived and it's very interesting. 15 tracks, the majority with vocals, all produced by Supra and sang by Becky. Most of the actual lyrics were written by Doyen-D in what must have been quite a departure from writing lyrics for his own hiphop tracks.

Sorry to have to do this but I have to namecheck Portishead, Lamb and Jhelisa to get where we're coming from with some Tori Amos thrown in as well (sorry, lazy journalism - I may as well just have listed every female vocalist I could think of). Production wise it's more often than not from an instrumental hiphop side of things rather than the jungle edges of Lamb so it obviously leans towards Portishead - high quality, at times sparse, hiphop production but without scratching. Becky's vocal range is incredible and her voice very good indeed. The album is collected together very well and is much more wholesome than the recent rash of bitty UK hiphop albums. Those with Supra's solo 7" will get a good idea of where the productions coming from. Now drop a good female vocal over it and that's where we're at.

It's obviously not going to be everyone who reads these pages cup of tea. if you're on the straight-laced hiphop tip and don't like to stray then stay away. If you're a bit more broad minded and want a nice album to chill through in what remains of the summer then it's well worth tracking down.

Respect to Supra for widening boundaries. I hope this sells well because the potential audience is massive but he just has to get it out there.
