 Rae & Christian AnotherLateNight LP

This is the third part in a new 'mixtape' style series of releases from Azuli - titled "Another Late Night" - the first two mixes were handled by Fila Brazillia and Howie B. These mixes got a heavy amount of praise in the press - although personally I never bothered to check them cos neither of those DJ's hit the X spot inside my cranium. So when I got to hear the latest volume was being sorted by Grand Central's Rae and Christian - I bothered to get hold of a copy.

The mix starts off very promisingly with a chunk of spritely hiphop with The Boulevard Connection - 'Copenhagen Claimin' Respect'. At this point your hopes are raised. However I think that the DJ's were impaired through the concept of the series - in that they overtly set out to make a late night vibed mix. Beginning hard and ending chilled - theres not a problem in that except Rae & Christian try to get too cute with it all. They try to vary the tempo n' experiment with the style .... perhaps its not the best idea to challenge the listener if your trying to mix down the vibes. The mixing is tight and theres nothing which seems out of place - its just the track selection. An example of this comes early in the mix - as mentioned Boulevard Connection hit with a fat bit of hiphop but this is matched up with the disco style beat of Joshua's 'Come On'. now both of those tracks are good quality - its just they dont complement when played back to back and in that sense you overlisten they're individual merits. I never knew many of the tracks wtihin the mix - obviously I recognise a couple of tracks such as 'Mary Jane' by Rick James and the nice redux of California Dreamin' by Jose Feliciano.

In summary - the mix gathers and loses pace by cuttin across funk, soul, disco dance, hiphop, downtempo breakbeat. There are some Rae & Christian remixes included as well - although they wont sit among my longtime favourites by the pair (they've kinda stripped, diluted and killed 'Flashlight' here). Sometimes it hits the spot but overall its a bit sketchy n' hit n' miss. A better vibe might have been created through a more rythmically conservative track selection which never had one eye on DJ mystic n' stuck to lookin through the overall objective of the mix. So I suppose the mix is quite enjoyable - if slightly patchy - but would need the exact right setting to set a mood n' give you the right dose of wind down sound.
