The moment many of you have been waiting for, the return of the hardcore sound!!! For many the period that was ruled by the likes of Hijack, Killa Instinct and maybe even in some peoples book The Criminal Minds, was the high point of hiphop itself, and now its making a small comeback thanks to UK Rap Records. “Widowmaker” is an LP that for many, will be a refreshing change due to the blatant lack of inspiration from Pete Rock and DJ Premier which so many other producers seem to copy. We are talking breakbeats, we are talking Star Wars samples, I’m talking quality music you can b-boy to! The only real downfall I can see to this LP is that it may sound dated. However, I don’t even know if all these tracks are old or new, I don’t even care. Because whilst it may not be groundbreaking like your Aesop Rock’s and your Saul William’s its very, very good at what it is. Its music to nod to, to fight to, to b-boy to, hell do what you want to it, just enjoy it. Some of the samples used will have you loving it, “Breathe” uses a sample that the advert used where two people are breathing in and out and it makes the tide go in and out… you know it? When its not great samples being used, its great breaks, like on “On The Run”. I tell you this would have a backpacker with an anvil in their rucksack dancing! So many good tracks to mention in fact, “Urban Warfare”, “Complex”, “Widowmaker”, “Section 12” & “Moving Silent” all need more than 5 listens per day. I really do love this album, Halo’s production is unique in today’s crazy hiphop world. The emcees aren’t quite as distinctive, but it all fits together nicely. The T.C.M crew bring back some real flavour into the scene, and I can’t get enough of it!
