Vincent Fedorchak/Julius Cavero 'Fuzz One: A Bronx Childhood' & 'The Nasty Terrible T-Kid 170'
2 new hardback books enriching our understanding of
the Bronx creation myths in relation to graffiti art.
Fedorchak's book is an enthralling story of a boy from
the country moving to New York and becoming a graffiti
pioneer before he reached his teens! This is a modern
story of growing-up: a picture of life in the Bronx
the likes of which I don't think has been seen before
by the hip hop generation - Kool Herc's name pops up
as one of his graffiti peers. Fedorchak was 11 in 73
(the year of hip hop's birth according to the Zulu
Nation). The photos show the development of the
artform's early styles. The photos aren't of the high
quality of 'Subway Art' but it stands to reason as the
photos weren't taken by professionals. The words are
more than vivid.
Cavero's book contains many photos of arguably one of
the New York masters of style right up to his work for
a recent graffiti game for the Pl*ystation 2 which he
stars in (the virtualisation of graffiti?) . His story
isn't as involving as Fedorchak's but contains many
interesting insights as he was part of hip hop's burst
into the wider world and media in the 80's (he did a
billboard for TDK in London in 1985). This book was
published with the "support" of Montana spraypaint and
Eastpak backpacks!?
Both books contain a good dose of drugs, crime and
violence ... I bet both of these guys have many more
stories to tell and opinions to share. When are
Bambaataa, Doug E Fresh etc going to tell their
stories?
