Michael Veal Dub media
An interesting academic musicological look at the ground breaking development of musical studios / sound processing technologies as instruments of composition / improvisation on a tiny island in the Carribean. As well as looking at dub 'soundscapes and shattered songs' in terms of (post-colonial) culture, the book illustrates the influence of dub on Jamaican society and politics (as well as on hip hop and other genres of music). The UK dub scene is mentioned in detail too...
A strong point of the book is that there are detailed descriptions of songs and the techniques used in them.
It's a little dry, but it's a thick informative book with plenty of rich revelations like "Every Spoil Is A Style". This is a particularly important book as it recontextualises the sound at the time of the rise of hyper-abstracted 'dubstep' music done completely 'in the box' (composed and recorded solely on a computer) in countries other than Jamaica.
