Debbie Nelson My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem media

Possibly the most dissed mum in the history of hip hop, here the world's best selling rapper's mother answers back at her most public critic: her son.

It seems to have been one of those families where misery was handed from generation to generation - a nuclear family in meltdown down the generations. Ms Nelson paints a picture of herself as a hard working 'good mother' bringing up kids (not just her own) in what might be charitably described as very difficult and violent circumstances. This story seems to refute the 'fictional' picture of her painted in Eminem's songs (and the film '8 Mile') especially the serious allegations of 'Cleaning Out My Closet' (apart from the huge issue of her wishing he was dead instead of her brother Ronald when he passed away).

It's a powerful read joining the best selling new genre of autobiography: (mother's) 'misery memoir'.

7/10
