DJ DSK Capitalist Punishment (mixtape)
DJ DSK – Capitalist Punishment
All the way live from Southampton (via the considerably less exotic locations of Phnom Pehn and Laos) we have DJ DSK’s Capitalist Punishment mixtape. It’s a concept affair with DSK using the tape to air his views on the dark side of Western politics. Which is fair enough, but I hear you asking is the damn thing any good? Well, from jump DSK lets us know that he is not a super-technical turntablist in the mould of Q-Bert et al. (He puts the scratches on different tracks) but before the Guild of 1210 Anoraks screams foul, check the music out. One thing you have to say about DSK is that he thinks big, taking on classic a capellas and flipping them over new instrumentals (EPMD’s ‘Strictly Business’ gets a re-fit over Mr. Lif’s ‘Ol’Crew’ while Masta Ace’s ‘INC Ride’ is coupled with J-Live’s ‘Ships Pass’). DSK makes sure that the instrumental’s vibe complements the lyrics (Just check his mix of Nice and Smooth’s ‘Hip-Hop Junkies’ and Abdominal and DJ Formatt’s ‘Ill Culinary Behaviour’ for proof) The man flips hip-hop he genuinely feels which is blatantly obvious from the track listing (A choice selection ranging from indy classic ‘The Essence’ by the Aboriginals through to Blak Twang and Est’elle’ss ‘Trixstar’), and he even throws in one of his own tracks as a bonus at the end of the CD as well. For a few Queens heads this mix CD can be yours (available from Dark-N-Cold and by request from the man himself at djdsk3000@hotmail.com), and seeing as DSK is headed for sunnier climes any day now make it snappy.
