DJ Woody Bangers & Mash (mixtape)

not too sure what the purpose of this is, DJ Woody, two times world DJ champ, mashes together over 60 ukhh classics into a 73 minute CD mix up. The reason i'm not sure is that it doesn't appear to be a full release, just a promo only thing, but our copy came through a distributer, Baked Goods, so it's getting through the proper channels. Oh well, if it's trying to get Woody some bookings then I wish I had a club cos i'd give him a show, cos this is the business!

the full tracklisting can be found over on woodwurk, his website, but as the liner notes say 'this mix is [of] all the artists who pioneered uk rap when it seemed nobody gave a shit about hip hop in this country'....London Posse, Mell'O', Blade, Unanimous Decision, Guttersnypes, NSO, Blak Twang, Braintax, Brotherhood, S.O.S., Krispy, Ruthless Rap Assassins, Demon Boyz, Caveman, Hunt Finn, Hardnoise, Hijack etc etc you get the picture? With tracks from '87 (London Posse's eponymous track) through to 2000 (Krispy featuring Woody, ok we'll give him that one!) and virtually every year in between it really is a superb retrospective look on the first dozen of the last 15 years of the uk scene, primarily showcasing that traditional hardcore sound that you should all know and (hopefully) love. There's a nice selection of familiarity with rarity - 'Hip Hop n Rap', the Brotherhoods first promo only outing for Virgin, 'Glimity Glamity' by the Demon Boyz nestling in along 'Badman is Robbin' and 'Money Mad'.

I've got to have a gripe cos no review is complete without one....my main bone of contention is the lack of the group that got me into this whole thing - where the heck is the Gunshot mix compilation?! Perhaps that can come in volume 2 (hint), but basically i'm hella impressed, and thats just the track choice. I havent mentioned Woody's ability to let the tracks have the emphasis but still manage to splice this many tracks into a single mix with a smattering of scratching, turntable trickery and other samples.

top stuff, beg, steal, borrow, download or copy if you can....
