Natural Self aka Brighton resident Keno 1 is going to be all over Breakin Bread releases this year. This, his first mix album, follows up the 7 released late last year and acts as a precursor to the forthcoming 'I Don't Need This Trouble' 12 out in July and the album to follow in the autumn, anyway onto this release...
A 22 track 60 odd minute mix representing the 'influence behind the music of Natural Self'. In lazy journalistic terms this can be described as heavy drums, but it goes way beyond that. Familiar tracks from way back from the Beasties, Shadow and Grandmaster Flash nestle in alongside recent cuts from the man himself in both monikers (Keno 1 and Natural Self) alongside unexpected African soul gems (the Ogyataana Show Band anyone?), a full range of tracks from the 70's to the 2000's nestle in next to each other with unexpected ease, not quite all bases covered but quite a lot of basses covered!
a nice funky mix of hybrids always relying on the funk, soul, hiphop and the overriding feel of the drums to bring the quality.
