Here’s some tasty mixtape offerings from down Reading way, with the Nine High collective dropping ‘First Take’ as a teaser ahead of some official releases. Composed of 4 MCs (Scotty Hinds, Fraksha, Brinks and Felony), 1 DJ (SA) and a beatboxer (Wandan, whose name you may have seen around in the last year), they all have strong live experiences (including playing at Hip Hop Kemp for the last 2 years) making this offering a strong show of their accumulated experience and energy over the mic and behind the decks. Just over 30 mins long, the mixtape features lots of classic bangers over which the Nine High lyricists show their abilities and prowess as well as managing to fit in some classic rhymes that won’t fail to raise a smile (unless you have no sense of humour, in which case you need to see a doctor or something. Seriously). The mixing and sequencing is tight with SA at the controls and the MCs’ different voices and tonalities play with and against each other nicely making this a very interesting and head nodding offering, way above the average of what can be heard today on self produced mixtapes. As a taste of things to come, ‘First Take’ definitely spells some good news and I look forward to hearing what the guys come out with. If you like your raps local then this should definitely be up your alley, and if you never heard of the Nine High boys before or much UK raps for that matter then this is a very nice introduction that should wet your appetite like it did mine. Seconds please.
