The H.Q. & Dutty South HQ Radio - Volume 2 (mixtape)
The H.Q. & Dutty South have put together a mixtape which reintroduces some of the long losts of UK hiphop. For this mix sees, amongst others The Icepick, Grizzly, Shaka Shazam and DJ Supreme all come together, to what for my ears has been a long, long time. OK, so I missed volume 1!
The mix is hosted by a guy called Dougie Ch£dda, who has a really strong cockney accent. Initially this gets on your goat a bit, but as the mix progresses his character shines through more and more until he actually becomes quite a decent host that gives this mix a more unique feel. As he chats along, with his banter nitting the mix together, a number of big American beats and few that I’ve not heard (possibly exclusive beats?) are used as the base for all the emcees to chat over. Dead Prez ‘Mind Sex’, Usher ‘Confessions’ & Roots Manuvas ‘Witness The Fitness’ are just a few of productions used to great effect.
It’s a welcome return to hear some of these emcees back, plus the few that I’ve not heard of more than hold their corner. A nice little reintroduction to some of the finest emcees that this country has ever produced, lets just hope that it’s not a fleeting return! From the press release, it would suggest that this indeed isn’t the last we’re going to hear.
