Itch FM Presents... The Lost City Volume II (mixtape)

Itch FM continues to represent with their second mix CD, plus the small matter of a dope radio show to boot. ‘The Lost City Vo. 2’ is chock full of UK emcees and producers, with plenty of exclusive tracks and freestyles, all thrown together by DJ Flip and hosted by Mr Ti2bs.

Hitting it off with the hosts latest single’s b-side is a great energetic way to begin. From there things get even better, moving through Sway’s lyrically superb ‘Welcome To London’, MCD’s surprisingly heavy grime track ‘Dash That’ and Tommy Evans’ doomsday ditty ‘Days Of Future Past’. The filling of the sandwich is slightly disappointing, with the middle tracks being a bit below par. Nothing really bad, but tracks like the bland Sincere ‘Now Or Never’ are easier to skip than endure. Thankfully the tail end of the mix picks up, back to a similar standard as the beginning. The resurgence starts with ‘I Like It’ by Sir Smurf Little & Conspicuous which, with its impressive wordplay, sing-along-chorus and dope trumpet sample is a hit through and through. The mix finishes with some nice freestyle offerings, including Doc Brown & Yungun rhyming over the untouchable beat of Ghostface’s ‘One’. They are hard pressed to top the original, but they still do a good job with their ode to Itch 105.5.

23 tracks which you’re unlikely to find elsewhere, the vast majority of them being dope, is value for your pound. The only real disappointment is that for a mixtape there isn’t much turntable trickery and as a result it sounds like a compilation with Tibbs chatting over the top. A small amount as opposed to 40 minutes of juggling is always nice, but you get no frills with this. Still it’s all about the music and you would certainly be hard-pressed to front on the quality this mix serves up.
