DJ IQ The Official - Vol. 3 (mixtape)

DJ IQ returns with the third instalment of ‘The Official’ mix CD series, blending yet more classics, exclusives, freestyles with his own blend of turntable jiggery. For those not familiar with his tune selections, there is a healthy blend of UK and US tunes, in an almost 50 /50 split.

As with most mixes, it starts with IQ showing some turntable skills. As always, he’s on point for the more technical heads, but non turntablist fans aren’t left to get bored as IQ doesn’t over indulge. The mix promptly bounces along to the headnodding P Brothers beat on ‘Got It On Me’ and through to the first, slightly disappointing exclusive freestyle by Jehst. A number of tracks later the best mix on the CD appears, with Jnerio Jarel’s ‘Do Yo Thang’ mixing into O.C.’s ‘Chase Game’ as if the tracks were made with this very purpose in mind. This is definitely where ‘The Official’ stands tall over it’s competitors, as IQ seems to pay much more attention to his mixing & blending than many other so called mixes. For all the juggling and crabbing, he leaves enough of the track untouched for you to nod head and enjoy and there are plenty of tunes to enjoy too, such as the IQ produced ‘Sweat’ with Bill Zoot plus the ridiculously funky SkreinTax tune ‘Scene Stealers’.

The main downer though has to be the appearance of a few too many bland, sub-standard tracks which don’t really fit the mix too well due to their lack of energy. Billy Brimstone’s ‘Keep It Live’ sticks out like a bit of a sore thumb as does the lifeless ‘Love’ by Lawless Elements. Appearances of tracks like these are likely to have an effect on the number of times you’ll want to play the mix throughout.

A few dodgy tracks can’t distract from the fact this is a very well crafted mix, which although it has a likely short shelf life, will have you bumping it on repeat and rewinding back to play through some of the blends for a good while. Judging on the tracks produced by IQ, the forthcoming ‘Brain Food’ LP could be an exciting project.
