“Run of the mill? Na, one in a mill” goes the seemingly obligatory mixtape catchphrase which covers all the tracks, yet in the “one in a mill”, it’s possible that for Smife this is more than just a catchphrase!
Despite this statement, Smife doesn’t come across as the average braggadocios emcee, even if he clearly has the skills to back up such a statement! Hailing from the Garage scene, this 20 year old London emcee has more concepts and lyrical wordplay ability than 20 other substandard Hiphop emcees. He’s proof indeed that Garage wasn’t all braps and rewinds!
From beginning to end “Run Of The Mill? One In A Mill!” serves up constant surprises as Smife pulls concepts out of nowhere and totally smacks it lyrically. From the pure genius that is “Paper Princess”, an ode to top shelf material, through to the piff anthem “Mary Jane”, the lyrics are so well written and delivered that you’ll be on rotation 10 within the first few hours of getting your hands on this mix.
I’m not sure how many of the beats on this mixtape are exclusive to Smife, as a few are certainly big name US beats, but given the right production base to work with, I feel Smife is set or certainly deserves to be, the next big thing.
