Sons of South (SOS) All Eyes on South (mixtape)

Sons of South (SOS) are four MCs (Naturekid, My Prophecy, Blaze MC and Verbal Remedy), one DJ (DJ Jeckal) and one producer (Terrorist) from southern England. ‘All Eyes on South’ is Sons of South’s first official release, and also the first volume of their 5-part ‘All Eyes on South’ mixtape extravaganza, with the rest due within the next 18 months. SOS isn’t neglecting the stage in favour of the studio either, so it’s going to be a busy year and a half for these Southern starlets.

‘All Eyes on South’ starts off in typical mixtape style. Beats, scratches and vocal samples declaring just how fucking great this is going to be. So are we let down or does ‘All Eyes on South’ live up to its boastful intro? Well, as with most mixtapes this one does suffer a little from some bi-polar tendencies. Tracks like ‘Pickpocket Academy’, ‘Green Eyes’, ‘Heaven’s Hate’ and ‘Underground’ stand out as strongly crafted songs with solid beats and tight lyrics. Other tracks seem to suffer from the mixtape mentality of throwaway rhymes and disposable beats that you hear way too often.

‘All Eyes on South’ is a good first outing for the SOS crew, although I can’t help getting mixtape blues when I listen to it – it’s too long, there’s not enough quality control and you’re hitting the right arrow on the CD player a little too much.

Don’t get it twisted though because these guys do know what they’re doing. Producer Terrorist has crafted some solid beats, the DJ knows his way around the tables and the four MCs sound like they’ve been writing lyrics for a good while now. SOS are bubbling with potential and they almost bring their collective skills to the boil on ‘All Eyes on South’. It just suffers from a generous track count and some weak selections.

I really look forward to hearing the second volume of ‘All Eyes on South’ and catching these boys live too. Keep your eyes and ears open because they could be in your town soon!
