Alex Blood DJ BFG Presents… Guerilla Network (mixtape)
This is clearly aimed as being a showcase for Alex Blood, as not only do you get the usual mix CD, but you also get a DVD with a little show real and some videos. Just shows the progression of musical promotion, that this type of thing can be done on a modest budget. Still, there’s no time to get nostalgic!
At 24 tracks deep and with the addition of the DVD, this is a fairly substantial release for sure. Throughout those 24 tracks, you get to hear a range of Alex’s work. What is clear though, is that he seems to have a certain formula when making tracks as a high proportion of his tracks have a sing-along chorus and similar rhythm to his rhyme patterns. Ok, they don’t quite capture the imagination Nate Dogg style, but they certainly set AB aside from much of the Hip-Hop being released over here. Lyrically he comes strong, with tracks like “Circles” showing his ability to smack the delivery timing wise. After the mix is drawing to a close though, you find yourself losing interest and this is mainly down to the similarity in the tracks. This is mainly through the delivery of the lyrics than the production credits (Alex himself and Baby J in the most part), which come off strong.
Alex Blood clearly has ability and his style is very comfortable, but there’s an underlying current of over-similarity over this mix CD and for his album proper I’ d like to hear something a bit more substantial and refreshing. Potentially big things ahead though and with Baby J behind him, I wouldn’t bet against him.
