Dap-C The Richest Misfit (mixtape)
Originally from Newcastle but currently living in Leicester, rapper Dap- C has released his latest offering in the form of ‘The Richest Misfit’ mixtape. His Geordie accent takes a bit of getting used to on first listening but it soon becomes clear that there is a decent flow and rhyming talent within his Northern twang.
Things start well with the Chipmunk soul of ‘Walking in the Rain’ and the street moodiness of ‘Next Saga’ holding your interest enough to keep listening. UKHH Legend Skinnyman then features on the Channel U hit ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ and although it’s not his strongest collaboration of recent years, it still adds further strength to a quality first third of the disc.
More Heatmakerz style sped up soul samples on ‘Superstars’, ’I Can’t Go On’ and ‘Fresh’ could lead to most reviewers accusing the artist of using played out production styles, however, this one is a sucker for that particular sound and so more points are scored for this reason.
Just when you think it’s all good, three unnecessary tracks appear at the end of the play list in the form of ‘Coke Digger’, ‘Gimme a Line’ and ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf Remix’. ‘Coke Digger’ is a re-make of the Kanye West track ‘Gold Digger’ about a lady who only dates coke dealers and ‘Gimme a Line‘ (also about the powdery white stuff) adds nothing to the beat from the Sean Paul club banger ‘Gimme the Light‘. Furthermore, the bonus track Remix doesn’t offer much different to the original and therefore contributes to a disappointing closing third.
Don’t get it twisted though, there’s enough on this mixtape to prove that Dap-C can offer something substantial and this project should do it’s job in gathering some interest for his debut album dropping in 2008.
