Lyrics Born Hello 12"
This is a solo joint produced and vocalised by Lyrics Born and dropping on Quannum Projects. The platter is working as an introduction to the new material making its way onto his solo lp 'Later That Day' which'll be seeing the street later in 2002.
The title track 'Hello' is slow hiphop - just skanking along at a snails pace. Quite relaxing with a little synth beat - nothing dramatic. I'd have liked some more layered production to drift focus away from the basic hook - cos theres definitely no major element that gets the ol' neck snapping. Lyrics Born handles vocal duties alongside some female vocals - they handle business with intertwined vocals during the chorus's. Lyrics Born has that wicked delivery and he just floats across the beat being the total focus of attention - its just a shame the beat lacks vibe and cant watch his back.
The b-side 'One Session' works itself into slumber with the same tempo as the a-side. However, this beat rocks a little more cohesive and does the biz. The beat steps slightly more organic which suits the reggae tempo and rappers styles. Whilst the beat isnt mad catchy it still feels like a better arranged and balanced song - a definite grower. Lyrics Born and some mates handle the mic - with everyone dropping those trademark fast couplets with ease.
Overall, this 12 certainly introduces a new style which is slightly removed from other material which might've featured Lyrics Born vocals in the past (aka Quannam, Latryx, etc). His highly individual flow definitely suits the style of music being made - its just a times it feels slightly soulless and doesnt have the impact it might have with some heavy musical arrangement. I'll definitely be checking for his LP cos I'm sure someone who can flip such diverse and creative production can step with an interesting and thought provoking long player.
