Diplo Eipistemology 12"
Big Dada have never been totally about hiphop, despite releasing albums by some of the finest UK hiphop artists and their latest signing, Philly based (via Florida & Mississippi) Diplodocus is resting somewhere between instrumental hiphop and straight up electronica more suited to the main Ninja Tune parent label. This two tracker stretches to over 20 minutes and is the first proper release following the limited 'Newsflash' white label serve as a precursor to the full length 'Bounce Aesthetic' due sometime in '04.
'Epistemology' appears to actually be a suite of four tracks starting off with some heavy breathing and electric guitar walks before the burst of jungle beats hits in...just as thats beginning to get familiar it segue's to a steppy bass breakdown with keyboard riffs, a few bars later female vocal samples are introduced and trumpet riffs as the intense beats drop out eventually to reappear. The track continues in this vein with samples and cuts dropping in and out, total breakdowns and tempo changes to keep you constantly guessing. It occasionally sounds a bit cluttered and messy in a Squarepusher drillnbass (or whatever its called nowadays) style but still manages to retain a musical element throughout. Interesting and intelligent quasi-electro psychedelic prog drum n bass hiphop genre jumping, barrier breaking music. If the Beatles made jungle?
'Summers Gonna Hurt You' is a 9 and a half minute epic of dirty low slung bass, epic electro beats and a mishmash of male & female vocal, slower but thinner than the Epistemology Suite
One for the more open and discerning ear and those interested in artists stretching the definition of instrumental hiphop. And are you allowed to show nipples on the front of 12" sleeves nowadays without a parental guidance sticker?!
