 Insight The Maysun Project LP

This social commentary project from underground stalwart/Edan hypeman and perennial producing/rapping underdog, Insight. It features some heavy beats and rhymes as well as some decent spoken word pieces, all delivering a state of the nation address to Americans nationwide. It’s time to wake up, sir. Your country is fucked.

Indeed, politics, and in particular, Dubya are popular topics for rappers these days, showing that rap is the “black CNN” as Chuck D once said. It takes a special rapper to make the same topics sound special and fresh. Whilst most rappers have a tired try at delivering some empty populist polemic, Insight takes the project once step further by widening the scope of his commentary. He talks about social structures and the doom of 20th Century living. He attacks these subjects with a thoughtful, clear and passionate delivery, with words and diction that are both simple and abstract together. He kills the album. Helped out by Dagha and Mr Lif, and even KRS-One popping up to deliver a refix of his “Message 2000” track, there’s enough MC help on hand to break up his breathless flows. “Rock That” and “Drop a Bomb” both use some great old skool beats and electronic noises, whilst the jazz and guitar influences are all pleasing to the ear. The quality of recordings vary from song to song but you can’t deny the quality on display, which shines through any mix problems… a rare thing for hiphop. If this is a precursor to the iminent “Blast Radius” or a project in its own right, it’s truly a great release, worth absorbing and getting into over repeated listens.
