Kero One Keep It Alive 12"
Kero One is a Bay area producer, MC and DJ who’s made a name for himself over the last few years with a first single picked up by DJs around the world, a Japan tour on the back of this first release, and most recently some production work for US3 as well as Grand Puba.
‘Keep it Alive’ is the latest release by the man on his own PLUG label, with a jazzy and summer tinged beat courtesy of DJ King Most. The beat is the real winner here for me, as Kero’s voice doesn’t seem to impact anywhere near as much as the music he raps over. Still he comes correct, with a nice flow and some positive vibes, as he rhymes about record digging and keeping vinyl alive.
A jazz remix keeps things going on a similar tip, with a nice infusion of horns that change the feel of the original, without making it unrecognisable. Add to that instrumentals and accapela and you’ve got yourself a very nice little single, especially if you’re down with music from the likes of Sound Providers, J5 et al.
