Wordsmith Statements & Stipulations LP
Don’t be confused, two Wordsmith’s, one from the UK, one from the US, this one’s from the US… simple. Thankfully, these two artists are comfortably distinctive and both worth checking in their own right. Following up his double LP, Wordsmith comes with perhaps more of a complete album in ‘Statements & Stipulations’.
Whilst the double header of ‘Rockstrumentals’ and ‘Classic Material’ had a healthy smattering of dope songs over a vast array of tracks, at an un-lightweight 18 tracks, ‘Statements & Stipulations’ concentrates that quality onto one CD. The result is a more intense listen, your ears bouncing from track to track enjoying their experience more often than not. The opening track ‘Statements & Stipulations Episode 1’ starts proceedings perfectly, with a dramatic violin sample building the mood, Wordsmith rhymes effortlessly over it. This track is cut frustratingly short however, which happens all too often on the LP. A rather abrupt fade out seems to silence Wordsmith in full flow on too many occasions which drives you up the wall. Still it’s testament to your enjoyment that when the track ends you get aggy! Luckily the best track ‘Ode to Tha Pioneers’ isn’t totally ruined by this annoying theme, allowing you to enjoy it’s superbly picked vocal sample and production, alongside Wordsmith’s charismatic flow.
For whatever reason, Wordsmiths last album never really saw light this side of the Atlantic, but with the standard of this LP in general much higher, I’d hope that this would see a much larger push by all the people involved. If you see this in the shops be sure to check it out, but failing that you may fancy trawling the net, because it’s worth the effort.
