Papoose Born In NYC 12"
The young man confidently states at the start of this banger, “This is how you rhyme over a James Brown sample” before launching in head first and tearing it apart. The beat, produced by N Tellect, hits in the all right places with crisp drums, theatrical horns and nicely chopped vocal wails. However, it sounds a little too much like a Just Blaze knock off for my liking.
On the vocal tip, the initial promises are more or less upheld as he spits “my body is the clothing for my soul/I bear my spiritual/so dressed in the flesh/I wear my physical”. Plenty of confidently delivered intelligent thug stuff here and no lazy mush mouthed delivery either.
Definitely one to ride out to then, but a little too much of what you would expect from an ‘NYC anthem’. I’m not sure about the saviour of the New York as I’ve heard him touted recently, but if it’s this or Diplomats lazy and generic fodder, I know whose camp I’m in.
