JAY DEE Jay Deelicious, The Delicious Vinyl Years EP

September sees a glut of big releases, from the mainstream hyperbole surrounding the Kanye and 50 Cent albums, to Necro and the Wildstyles soundtrack re-release as well as homegrown talents like Verb T and Last Skeptic, Million Dan and Kano (he used to rap, sort of). So one could almost be forgiven for overlooking another Jay Dee release. ‘Almost’ being the operative term.

But unlike the posthumous 'Shining' and the brilliant but slightly misunderstood 'Doughnuts' LP, 'The Delicious Vinyl Years' is a celebration of his early work as a producer and remixer for other artists. Seven tracks from The Pharcyde’s 'Labcabincalifornia' sophomore album are included. At it’s release in 1995 Jay Dee was aged just 21 yet his neo-soul sound displayed a musical depth well beyond his years, and in the song 'Runnin' he achieved a rare feat, making a track that both B-boy and even their mother likes.

In addition to 'Labcabin..' Jay Dee also worked with The Delicious Vinyl label on mixes for the Brand New Heavies, from the subtle jazzy composition of ‘Sometimes’ featuring a young Q-Tip to the funked up cut-up of Marvin Gaye’s ‘Got To Give It Up’ used for ‘Saturday Night’, with a guest appearance by Mos Def, all of which and more (including an instrumental cd) are included here.
As a compilation album it is unlikely to be the last considering his accomplished and substantial body of work. Out of respect to Dilla’s memory all proceeds from the album will go to his mother, Maureen Yancy.
