 Prefuse 73 Preparations LP

For anyone familiar with the classic Preufse 73 sound; kicks, snares, sharp electronic snaps, murky textures, and weird samples are all present and correct. But there are also less familiar elements, experimentation with classical composition as well as live instrumentation to create a delicious melting pot of psychedelic blip-hop. All the while swirling around this contradictory Hip hop nucleus.

If 2002’s‘One Word Extinguisher’ was a sound-defining album for Prefuse, and ’Surrounded By Silence’ a collaborative benchmark (featuring a stellar cast of emcees; EL-P, GZA, Masta Killa and Ghostface, it would be hard not to be) ‘Preparations’ is an album with a more intimate feel. ‘Preparations’ is a solo excursion, albeit for a few notable collaborations; ‘The Class Of 73 Bells’, featuring the NY-based alternative band School Of Seven Bells, fronted by twin sisters whose dreamy vocals and Prefuse’s lo-fi melancholic production combine almost perfectly to make one of the warmest and complete singles of 2007. Battles drummer, John Stanier features on ‘Smoking Red’, a futuristic blend of industrial drums and digital snaps.

Instrumental Hip hop albums can often disappoint, getting caught up in gimmicky cuts, or suffer from delusions of grating grandeur, or can even worse (and often in combination with) just be plain old boring. But what makes Prefuse 73’s music, and ‘Preparations’ such a thrilling listen is the size of the musical palette used, there are no boundaries in the sounds and styles he is willing to embrace.
