Dept. Of Rec and Kenneth Masters Will We Ever Be Famous? EP

Dept. Of Rec and Kenneth Masters are coming from Philadelphia, and I don’t mean that weird fake cheese shit. Whenever an act needs to ponder the fact ‘Will We Ever Be Famous?’ you can bet your last penny on them never getting there. Well first track suggests they could score a big bit with the underground and even cross over nicely. ‘Declarations (…Of War)’ is by Kenneth Masters, and is a bit of a stonking track. K.Masters proves he’s got skills on the mic, and does so over good but not incredible beats. The production is rather simple, with an air-raid siren sample and deep bass. It’s the rhymes that hold the listener, real good flow, and smooth to the ear. I also like the hook which repeats ‘I I De De Clare Clare… War’, it works nicely.

Sadly the EP takes a vertical drive into the pool of wank. Actually maybe that’s a bit harsh, but the rest of the tracks just don’t make you want to play them all the way though. The first half of each track is able to hold your attention for like a minute, but after that you’ll find your self either going back to ‘Declarations (…Of War)’ or just flipping another piece of wax on the deck. The problem is that the production is very 2D and doesn’t have anything going on in it, the lyrics are a bit better, but their not such good lyricists that you’ll carry on listening.

I really wouldn’t recommend this, sure the first track is rather tasty, but it doesn’t justify the rest of it. Will they ever be famous? Doubt it, they could get a lot better if the production is raised, but I wouldn’t personally hold my breath to hear what these blokes are up to next.
