 Edan Mic Manipulator EP

A new name to me - Edan - appears here with his first solo EP titled 'Mic Manipulator'. Here he's given us four vocal tracks and two instrumentals to showcase his production and emcee skills. From first impression - he's got rhyming skills in abundance with a twang to his flow that reminds me of early Gift of the Gab stuff. He can definitely rhyme n' his voice has good clarity n' diction - there are some funny punches in his verses n' overall the standard of wordplay is good - "Dreamin about battling a petty mc, I'd rather trade bars with the likes of Moe Dee, See I rock the fundamentals cos I'll never be above that, I'm only 21 but I know all the words to Love Rap". The title track has the nicest verses upon it although the other tracks 'Humble Magnificent', 'Adrenaline Rush' and 'Dope Rhymes For Sure' each have moments to crack a little smile although at times your aural concentration can drift with the constant tempo of the delivery. The subject matter is strictly Rakim-ish! Well when you see the tune titles you know its gonna be brag innit.

The production across the EP isnt as consistent as the rapping - and for me its slightly patchy. The drums are well balanced and certainly have throw to suit each track - the breaks are generally overlayed with jazzy loops and horn/bass stabs - but to a fault there generally isnt much diversity beyond the main hook. There are however some quality moments - the standout being the title track which has good carry with a bouncey break layered with a lively chopped piano hook underlain by a cool simple b-line to rock your woofer.

Overall - a good energy fueled debut with one very good title track. Edan perhaps needs some slight smoothing with the consistency and diversity of production. Raise the level of the beats and they'll be something to really check for next time, cos the rhymings on point for sure. Nicely.
