Cut Chemist & DJ Shadow Product Placement LP

So here we are again - eleven months after the Brainfreeze Mix was put into cryogenic storage (last performance Jan 12th 2001) we have a follow up mix titled "Product Placement". Trust me - thats one ironic title - cos just like Brainfreeze this CD is being only released to those attending their live performances of the mix. So far there have been only 10 shows across the globe since it was first performed towards the end of October 2001. I dunno how many more there will be cos there not much time to fill between Cut Chemist's production/remix work n' the next DJ Shadow LP (due in spring 2002). This means only one thing - INTERNET BIDDING WAR - its gonna get expensive.

Anyhow - Cut Chemist n' Shadow have followed the same secret formula used last year. A straight team up for some more heavy funk filled world dominance. Records the normal head (aka me) cant even dream of knowing, owning, or even seeing an original in a lifetime. Thats the killer part of it - you love the breaks, the soul, the scratching, the mixdown, the cleverness, the X factor, the fact its recorded live on original priceless vinyl.... but you cant do it, compete, etc. Its that whole "mad dusty crate digger" concept taken to its most extreme - a massacre of sacred seven's the likes of which are guarded secrets by those select elite who've spent a lifetime listening to tons of shit records - to find those gems we can hear in the mix. Its in maintaining that faith to the culture of break hunting that they've limited the release of these Cd's - and trust me - it made me HUNGRY for a copy. Product Placement baby.

Its a bit of a tough thing to review this as I purely acknowledge that I know about three songs on the whole of this mix. That said I aint a fuckin snob - I couldnt give a fuck v- the mix sounds wicked - it got my head n' feet moving - and therefore did the job - nuff said. Product Placement basically follows the same instincts of the first mix - smart samples, songs you think you know until the evolve and they're relicks you've never heard, sharp cutting n' juggling, and just killer killer breaks. There is a lot more beat juggling on this mix and as a consequence it doesnt flow as well as Brainfreeze - its a bit more stop start. The second of the two mixes flows slightly better than the first and includes loads of records that will make you smile from ear to ear as you think you know it - BUT YOU DONT! Class. Anyhow - I'm not going to spoil it by going through all the concepts - you need to listen and enjoy it for yourself. Turntablism that NEEDS TO BE HEARD by more than just chinstrokers and screwfaces.

I hope someone does a rank vinyl bootleg like they did with Brainfreeze Mix so that it at least allows everyone to pop down the local HMV out there to grab a copy n' deep fry their head to this excellent forty-five minutes of fun.
