Cut Chemist & MadLib Bunky's Pick b/w 6 Variations of In the Rain 12"

This 12" features two of the tastiest producers out there in the wideworld of music. Cut Chemist (Jurassic 5, Ozomatli, Brainfreeze, etc) and Madlib (Lootpack/Quasimoto) step up here to mix, cut n' blend together some dark old funk. They've basically given themselves free rein to reinterpret a bunch of orginal funk tracks being released on a Stones Throw compilation titled 'The Funky 16 Corners'.

Cut Chemists track 'Bunky's Pick' steps with a style of DJ Shadow's Lesson 4 and the Product Placement/Brainfreeze sets - sorta like a 9 minute megamix cuttin breakbeats n' riffs up from around 9 seperate tracks. As you would expect from hearing other pieces of Cut Chemist production - the track keeps everything rolling with high tempo raw breakbeats sweeping across snatches of smooth funk. Its a definite floor mover and does well to showcase some of the heavy breaks present on the LP. In contrast Madlib comes with a different technique on '6 Variations of In the Rain' where he switches up perspective and shows his skills in reworking the vibe in every direction. He does this through creating 6 seperate tracks using Billy Wooten’s original version of 'In The Rain'. This track is a bit patchy for me - its definitely varied and I was feeling some of the heavier moments - it definitely showcases what we all knew though - Madlib is one of the premier beatmakers out there today.

For everyone's information n' to satisfy any hunger - 'Bunky’s Pick' is the third single in this Stones Throw 'The Funky 16 Corners' series, itd following on the heels of The Highlighters’ Poppin Popcorn, and The Soul Seven’s South Side Funk. I'll be chasing up my local wax vendor to try and track these down as this 12 is a strong advert for the series as a whole. Definitely worth twenty minutes of anyones time.
