Bias Delirious 7"
It's been a few years since DJ Bias released his "Relax and rock with..." EP and those who bought the white label release will ahve been fiending for some more beats from Lewis Parker's sometime DJ. It seems Bias has spent the lst few years mastering the art of tight sampling, because this two track 7" is so well put together and mastered you wouldn't believe it was an independent release. The A-side "Street of life" has a bouncy Hiphop beat with strummy guitar, dreamy strings and a folk vocal over the top. On the flip is the bassline driven "Sunrise". Gloomy background samples, great switch ups and haunting male vocals.
Though definately not one for those whose Hiphop needs a rapper and a frown at all times, I think this will do very well. It seems to have a promotional push behind it with ad's in the press and the like. The press release says ir "represents a departure from the more clichéd sounds associated with the rash of chill out releases" which is pretty spot on. Like a Hiphopper doing music for "chill out" types, a less mopey Portishead if you will.
It will be interesting to see if his upcoming "Worry beads" EP will feature any emcees because the Lewis track off his first record was well soulfull.
To sum up, if you're open to the idea of Lewis Parker/Beatminerz style samples thrown over better beats with folky vocals, this is the joint. Quality stuff kiddies, roll on the EP.
