The Groove Criminals Kicking Up Dust/Caterpillar Smokes 7"

This is a tasty little platter - one thats definitely flavoured from the left side of producer Twizt's mind. The opener 'Kicking Up Dust' features a mellow deep bass rumble alongside a shuffling minimal but snappy break - nothing complicated but very atmospheric. The eerie vibe is well complimented by an edgy downtempo male vocal - with the whole track being very reminscent of early Massive Attack, Red Snapper and Zero 7. I like this track a lot - its not one to bump before a party but more a good chilling piece to appreciate through a hefty haze of weed. Definitely quality, definitely wicked, definitely intriguing.

The flip 'Caterpillar Smokes' comes with a more straight edged touch - going for the sampled beatscape rather than using the vocal to get atmospheric. The best element of the production is the amount of time and space it gives itself to breath - theres nothing hurried or over layered - everything has its place and works itself into the track. This 'space' is a definite strength and its this skill that gives the production a haunting atmospheric effect. The track features some sampled vocals, some chilled effects (water, etc), a rounded polished bassline, all brought into shape by a floating organ riff and guitar twang. Lush.

Overall, a really nice 7" which showcases a high level of production knowledge. The music is beautifully arranged and creates atmosphere. My favourite track is the a-side as the live verse/chorus vocal element gives the track that extra edge. Check this if your searching for some chilled music to use as an alternative to the harder hiphop stuff. Plus it comes with a free badge.
