Natural Self The Sound 7"
Natural Self may be known to Breakin Bread aficionados already, due to a previous release under the name Keno 1. “The Sound” is the first release from his planned LP and sets his stable out nicely.
The first track is pure funk. Building up from some finger clicks and claps, the beat progresses quickly with extra percussion being layered to form the solid backbone of this dancefloor filler. The funk itself comes from Quantic Soul Orchestra’s John Styles, who provides some really nice sax loops and interplay, utilising, as he does, baritone, tenor and soprano saxophones throughout.
Flip over for “The Foundation” and the funk continues, albeit with jazz flavourings. This is a more chilled track, so once you’ve danced your socks of to the A side, you can kick back and relax with this more introspective tune. The beat is made up of African drumming and, with the talents of John Styles being utilised again, these two songs fit perfectly together. So, there’s a definite flow between the two songs, it’s just a shame that you have to change the record over halfway through!
And while this is described in the press release as leftfield, don’t be fooled or put off. There are no random noodlings here, no tangents to follow, just two beautiful tracks that complement each other wonderfully.
