‘Sing Sad Songs’ is the last track on Def Tex’s ‘Serene Bug’ LP, perhaps not the best track off the long player, but hey its on a 7’’ inch record so I had to buy it. Its got a well nice mellow beat, with a nice funk guitar feel, plus some wicked background singing which sounds a bit like a bunch of monks. The emcees are more than capable of lacing this beat with strong lyrics, and they do so. Again perhaps not the emcees strongest track off the LP but by no means weak. On the B-side its got a nice instrumental track, with lots of nice cutting in it, in fact me not being a huge instrumental hiphop fan, this track is highly pleasing to me lug oles’. If you’re a sad vinyl junky, you just know when you find this you won’t be able to resist the old 7’’. Your lucky though, because when you bring it home you’ll be happy you did. It’s also a good introduction to the production delights of the ‘Large Lefties’ who handle all the beats on this. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for those boys in the future. Don’t forget to check the Def Tex album, its one of the best albums of 01, so pick it up.
