 Braintax Riviera Hustle 12"

This is the second single to be taken from Braintax's excellent 'Biro Funk' LP. The a-side of this twelve is arguably the best track on the LP.

'Riviera Hustle' is a anecdotal masterpiece - describing with livewire panache the fictional tale of two hustlers trekkin about on the French Riveria. The two MC's - Braintax and Jehst - use superb wordplay to play the role of dirty rotten cohorts being down and out on the Med. The latin infused beat perfectly matches the vibe of the verbals and the overall package moulds into a slab of classic rap. I dont need to get into the gritty details as we all know that Braintax and Jehst know the coup when it comes to quality performance. This is a track you'll be checkin on the rewind in years - trust it'll still make you smile with some timeless lines.

The b-side 'So What?' is a 2002 club style hybrid with a static stabbed beat laying down a fairly bare sound consisting of mainly a shuffling snare, singular bass and various synth fx. The beat feels a bit soul-less and stripped of the organic vibe you normally get with a Braintax track - but seems to suit the style of the track cos the whole vibe seems a bit more aggy than normal. The vocals are handled by Braintax and Mystro giving shouts to the regions (probably) visited on recent live tours. I wasnt feeling this track that much - I didnt find it lyrically memorable and slightly mundane when compared to some of the subject matter tackled during 'Biro Funk'. It might suit other heads who feel Braintax's hiphop has always needed that little more aggy clubby style.

Overall, an excellent twelve which will hopefully get Radio play and turn some heads towards picking up the solo LP. But perhaps the lack of an a-side 'Riviera Hustle' remix makes it more worthwhile to pick up the LP rather than invest a fiver for the b-side. Have a listen. The twelve comes complete with instrumentals and a very rare occurrence for Braintax - an accapella of Riviera Hustle for you budding beatfreaks.
