Foreign Beggars Seasons Beatings 12"
This is the second release from the Foreign Beggars – a London-based crew that consists of emcee Orifice Vulgatron and producer Dag Nabbit. Already making some noise after their debut 12” “Where did the sun go”, this follow-up will do nothing but secure their reputation. What stands out about this release is the diversity of the music from track to track, each with a completely distinctive feel of its own.
It starts off with the dark sounding “Coded Rhythm Talk”, very suitably featuring Taskforce… who else? With three emcees spitting mad multis about dancing with zombies, chewing razor blades and drinking uranium, the verses are very well complemented by Dag Nabbit’s intense beat, with it’s wicked banjo melody. “Prepare for the end of the world.”
Next on the playlist is “Evil Dr Hip-Hop”, featuring Dark Circle. Described on the press release as the “calm after the storm”, with which I’ve almost got to agree. It’s got some nice, jazzy production that reminds me more of the first 12”, and some next-level flows on the hook. To be honest when I first heard this I thought the crazy speed of the hook didn’t work all that well with the smooth feel of the track, but it’s seriously grown on me, and now I just can’t help nod my head to the unique flow.
Finally is “Dark Parts”, a Foreign Beggars solo production. Again this tune has a completely different style to the other two, with a much more bouncy, uptempo vibe. Of course it’s got Orifice demonstrating his soon to be trademark fast flow, as well as a cool singy-style hook.
Although this has a distinctive London flavour, the Foreign Beggars have definitely got a unique sound. A highly recommended release from a crew I’m excited to hear a lot more from.
