Ty Groovement/Ha Ha 12"
What is there left to write about Ty that hasn’t already been said? The new single released as an appetizer for the forthcoming album ‘Upwards’ hits the spot, and if the rest of the new Ty album is as good as this, then it’s all over. Everyone will have to give up, because quite frankly, it doesn’t get much better, and if it does then someone better show me.
First of all, ‘Groovement’ feat. Bembe Segue is a rare combination of beautiful beats, followed by synth and squelchy bass. This dirty bass feel is carried through both sides of this 12”, as is Ty’s unmistakable smooth, yet deceptively quick delivery. As always, his wordplay leaves nothing to be desired, razor-sharp lyrics dipped in caramel, witty and to the point. Groovement is something different to Ty’s usual offerings, combining funk & rare groove styles to give the kind of music seldom produced these days. This has a real Groove Armada-esque feel to it, especially when Bembe comes in to the fray for ‘part 2’. The Latin b-bop gives this track a whole new fresh dimension, and makes the smile on your face widen. What this track highlights is not only Ty’s production skills, but also demonstrates his versatility to pull off a different style and feel of music.
The flip ‘Ha Ha’ is awesome. Even better than ‘Groovement’, and sitting pretty with ‘turn it up a little’, and ‘can’t hear you’ as Ty’s standout offerings. This track is taken from the forthcoming album, and if it continues in this vein, then ‘Upwards’ is well on the way to becoming THE album of the year. The electro-synth bass line is very much dancehall inspired, and should really find itself on Big Dada’s ‘Electro Caramel’ label. This works well with the simple break & backing vocals, and is one of those hooks you’ll find yourself humming in the street, in the bath, or wherever. Ty brings to the fore his sense of humility, and the fact he still shops in Tesco. This is modesty in its most (in)sincere form! The lyrics as mentioned before are fully of amusing intelligent witticisms, cutting rhymes, and elaborate verbal illustrations. He even takes time to name check Craig David, and ex-Liverpool footballers Ian Rush & Ronnie Whelan (damn, the guy’s even a Kopite!),
As Ty himself says, “oh my goodness.”
Go out and get the single, the album, or both. An essential head-nodder for DJ and punter alike, this 12” gives you a little bit of everything, from the laid-back Jazziness of ‘Groovement’, to the bouncy-ness of ‘Ha Ha’, without doubt the best offering I’ve heard for quite a while.
