Yungun / Essa Push 12"
There’s a lot of hype surrounding Yungun/Essa at this time, I never really go off hype, I like to check stuff out for myself, thankfully I was sent a copy of the new Yungun 12” forthcoming on Janomi, for me one of the most consistent labels out there, they haven’t had a multitude of releases, but all of the releases have been quality.
Both tracks on the 12” are produced by Ben Grymm, it astounds me there isn’t as much hype surrounding Ben Grymm after hearing the 2 tracks he constructed for this release. This is class, “Push” sees a raw beat surrounded and entwined with all manner of noises, it’s hypnotic, it’s pretty damn raw. But the thing is this could should work as a play out tune, Yungun’s lyrics start by suggesting to the ladies to get down to the music, afterwards we see exactly why Yungun is making a lot of emcee’s “fix up”, and not look so sharp. He stands out from the crowd, he has charisma, he has ability, and the way he delivers his rhymes puts him up there as one of the top emcees in the country, “I’m like a suicide terrorist, I am the bomb”. Nuff said.
Second track is “Spit Fire”, this feature’s Kyza, and is again excellently produced, this has a more serious feel to it, but with enough musical edge to make sure it’s appeal is not limited. Yungun and kyza spit a verse each then trade short verses back to back, I’m not sure which emcee comes off strongest, and it doesn’t even matter really. Subject matter is obvious from the title of the track; it’s pretty much an all out assault.
Overall I wish people sent me more records/CD’s like this, I wish people just sent me stuff actually, anyway you don’t wanna miss out on this, release date is set for 5th April, I’m hoping this gets some good coverage, I’m hoping Ben Grymm get’s a bit more spotlight, and I’m looking forward to the next Janomi release….
