Cappo Grand Final / Learn To Be Strong (Q.S.O remix) 12"

Cappo is the man of the moment right now. Spaz the World has left everyone open mouthed in awe and admiration, and this 12” really hits the spot, and continues in the same vein.

First off, I’m gonna start with the AA side, the Quantic Soul Orchestra’s remix of Learn to be Strong. This is a fucking amazing track. I love the remix, as I do all of Quantic’s work. Will Holland, the man behind this collective, and many others started out with Breaking Bread, and now finds himself on the Brighton-based Tru Thoughts label. Quantic really brings it to the fore with this remix track, a ridiculously funky remix of Learn to be Strong. Anyone who’s heard anything by Quantic will know what to expect. Wonderful beats, nice horn and brass sections, and those extra little percussion bits. Basically a soul Orchestra. This coupled with the quality lyrics laid down by Cappo, and the original P-Brothers production gives us piece of hip-hop music seldom produced these days. This has a real quality feel to it, especially with the beautiful backing vocals kick in, and really is something that you can drop at any hip-hop gig, or any funk/soul night. This is a rare kind of versatility, as most remixes of hip-hop tracks generally take away from the original, not add to the music in this way. Very, very impressive indeed.

Flip the disc, and you have the A side on the 12”, Grand Final. This is another of the standout tracks from Spaz the World, this time without the funk treatment by Quantic, but with the same quality P-Brothers Production, and Cappo’s cypher. A smooth down-tempo track, provoked by the background vocal sample, and bass, coupled with thought provoking lyrics. What really comes across in Grand Final, is that Cappo has a real captivating story-telling capacity, like a modern day soothsayer. You are compelled to listen to what he’s saying and let your conscience take note of the words. I really like Grand Final, but it’s not the reason for buying this piece of wax, nor am I likely to play this outside of the confines of my flat. The QSO remix is the real selling point.
