 Skinnyman I'll Be Surprised 12"

“If I make it till tomorrow, I’ll be surprised.” The UK’s own ghetto superstar, Skinnyman, the man of the people brings his empowerment vocals and tales of grime and triumph over adversity to a funk-tinged soul song. It seems that in the last year, Skinny has really stepped up his game in terms of production and this has given his vocals a lot more confidence. Now that he believes in his backing, it immediately makes him believe in himself. Tales of crack addiction and upsetting your mother along with resigned to a life of crime and poverty lyrics, this is usual Skinnyman fare. However this time there is something more poignant about it and this bodes well for the forthcoming “Council Estate of Mind” album. “Never Gonna Happen” is a similar themed track that is over a more minimal beat, more muted and Skinny sounds calmer. His tales of ghetto bleakness are continued here. He goes into his life in prison and how this has changed his outlook on life. The bleaker backing fits more with these lhyrics than the first track however on the first track, Skinny brought the funk and sounded hot all over it. This time, his calmer more resigned persona does wlel but I am really digging funky Skinnyman.

I look forward to the album.
