This new 12 from Supa T, Lewis Parker and all them CON artist people is strangely titled "Salsa Smurf" - and after listening to it I still dont have a clue why really. Anyway - unlike the previous four/six track packed EP releases - this piece of wax comes with two vocal tracks (with instrumentals). The a-side is the previously quizzically mentioned Salsa Smurf. This track is produced by L.Dolo who comes with some pounding horn type stab n' a fairly large drum snap - oh and some little clicky clocky sounds (tongues clicking) and a vocoder voice asking heads to "do the Salsa Smurf". But this beat kinda loops throughout the track without much variation and sorta gets a bit vexing after a while cos this track is VERY long. From the emceeing perspective - I dont think many heads will be blown away by the verbal offerings of Profound, Supa T, Lewis Parker, Jehst, etc. I mean there are some pucca oneliners of course cos they are blindin MC's but it doesnt seem to hold the vibe you felt with the Fuckoff & Finalisation EP's. I cant put my finger on it but it doesnt seem to grab you round the neck and throttle you till your redfaced n' gasping for the next punchline. I suppose there isnt a good hook to to the whole track - and then towards the end it just fades out and away BUT whilst the rappers are still speakin - what the fuck is that? Instantly forgetable thats what. The track has a video hoping to get rotation on MTVBase but I dont think this tune represents the CON artists that well at all. The B-side is titled "Jazzy Styles" and yup it is jazzy indeed and features that beast hybrid beat known as the standard jazz-funk looper produced by Lewis Parker whilst he sleeps n' dreams of cloud shapes n' forthcoming solo lp's. With a real hazy type beat which kinda ooozes complacency - its very slow n' melodic but also mighty repetitive. Sleepy music for insomniacs with a need for good moody mogadons (the woman singing in the background should be a cheap alternative to cryo-preservation of body parts). The vocals come delivered with panache n' them almost hippy imagery type of perspectives - there are again some tasty moments when you listen careful to the lyrics. But overall - I dunno - I'm disappointed. Perhaps its a grower - I fuckin hope so cos I thought the first two CON releases were full of vibe/life n' therefore hit the decks ultra tasty. © ukhh.com 1999 - 2000 |
