The Blacknificent Seven 'Ere Comes Da Black 12"

When you see the ‘super 7’ emcees who contribute to this release, you can’t help but be at least a little interested. Seanie T, Roots Manuva, Jeff 3, Karl Hinds, Rodney P, Est’elle & Skeme… smoking! Unfortunately a rush of disappointment came over me when I heard “Ere Comes Da Black” with its drab, repetitive beat that even such an All-Star roster couldn’t rescue.

Whilst a shite lead track would usually make a 12” a lost cause, in fact, this wax is an essential purchase regardless. That’s because DJ Mentat and Keith Lawrence rescue the show by serving up their own respective interpretations on two remixes. Both add a heap more character and vibe than the original, despite the remixes being totally different in style. This turns a lifeless track, into two individual bangers, worthy of your hard earned. The B-side also livens up proceedings with “Mrs. Onda ‘Syde” which is a superb introduction to the lyrical skills of Jeff 3, for those who don’t know. With the Blacknificent Seven LP soon come… we wait in anticipation!
