 Braintax Run The Yards 12"

After focusing on his imprint for a while, Joey Brains is back with the first single from his forthcoming album “Panorama”, the follow-up to the well received “Biro Funk”. And in true Braintax style, there is a real purpose to the tracks, something that for me has always made his material exciting.

“Run The Yards” is a heavy beat wearing monster that sounds loud and grumpy, with lyrics taking a healthy swipe at the “London media white trash”. Whilst being white trash and semi-involved in media I’m not offended, I live in Cardiff, I do worry for my ukhh.com colleagues who may be running for the hills like they listened to Iron Maiden! Still the concept is nice and it’s about time these types were called out. My gripe would be with Beat Butcha’s production though. Whilst I like the power of it, the slightly off beat production will mean this track forgoes too much play outside warm cosy bedrooms. The bouncy self produced “Last Tenner” isn’t necessarily a club track either, more an ode to post-club antics, with it’s witty take on Saturday night shenanigans.

Whilst it’s a shame the lead single might not fit too well on your deejay playlist, the signs are looking rosy for “Panorama”. If it’s anything like “Biro Funk”, it’s going to be getting heavy rotations from me, but until then, I’ll be spinning this 12”.
