Wanted Records Presents… the 8 Ball Mixtape Volume 2 12"
Volume 1 obviously passed me by, so I’m straight into Volume 2, which always makes me feel like I’ve missed out on something, but hey. In a rather charitable act by these chaps at Wanted Records, all profits of this CD go to the National Autistic Society which is a good cause for sure. Still, the quality of the mixtape needs to be worthy of you parting with your money.
This UK mix features some big names like Roots Manuva, Braintax and even exclusives from Verb T and the Diversion Tactics, but it also has a heavily Scottish influence, which is interesting if like me, your exposure to Hip-Hop north of the border is minimal. Ok, some of it is hard to stomach and there are plenty of fillers throughout the 30 tracks, but there are also some little gems that you’re unlikely to hear anywhere else. Highlights are Ransom Badbones’ “Taking Medication” and DJ Intex ft. Ewhurst “Feels So Good”, which is a good demonstration of the more known artists, coupled with the refreshing inclusion of lesser knowns.
In a world where music, particularly Hip-Hop, is under attack from being overly money driven, this mixtape makes a refreshing change. Ok, so it’s not 100% banger after banger, but it does show the range of music on offer the length and breadth of these Isles. For that variety alone, this is worth investigation.
