Marvin Get By (Be Good) 12"
Apparently known formerly as Marvin the Martian who was a Hip Hop pioneer in the Brixton area, comes Marvin and his single ‘Get By (Be Good)’. I can’t verify the former as I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard of him but I can verify that the new single is amp!
Chatting about the day-to-day pressure faced by South London inhabitants (congestion charges, bombs etc) Marvin has plenty of passion and aggression when conveying his subject. Ok, those of us who live in the rest of the UK cannot totally relate (hell I spend my days stressing over which breakfast cereal to buy) but it makes for good listening. The beat, produced by ‘the peoples best named producer 2007’ DJ Jack Nimble, starts with some little nursery style chimes and quickly slides into a brutal bass kick.
There are two remixes on this single but as is the usual order of the universe, neither comes close to the original although they do give it a different complexion. That’s not a major problem though as ‘Get By (Be Good)’ does more than enough the first time around. With his ‘Devil in the Distance’ LP due to drop in 2008, Marvin promises to make a few waves in the near future. Keep them peeled.
