The Herbaliser Good Girl Gone Bad 12"

This Herbaliser 12 wets appetites ready for their new LP moving from bud to blossom in late March. As a taster it works cos now I've got the bare munchies! Lemme break it down a bit.

The a-side 'Good Girl Gone Bad' slinks along with style n' substance. Style comes through the cruise control use of smooth trumpet stabs n' jive style guitar business. Substance comes through the shuffling drum break n' Wildflowers clear and deliberate delivery. People have crit some of Wildflowers' last verses but she shines upon this - the music balances with her voice n' makes it highlight strong. She's able to hold solo vocal duties with ease and this type of production suits her snugly. The whole vibe of this track is ace. As usual with any Herbaliser production - everything has that extra quality touch which just push things the good side of fuckin stylish. They come with the little background tweaks, the extra noise, the multiple layering, organic sounds levelled around - sounds wanky? Nah - this is hiphop production without badbwoy attitude pretensions - bare fun, crisp, n' deep. This ability to morph double styles is why Herbaliser are a worldwide (uk) export.

The next track shows why Herbaliser are onto their fourth longplayer - you can fuck about with the little touches but if you aint got the basics locked then it'll sound pretentious. What are the main reasons why this 'Verbal Anime' remix works as a hiphop track? Quality mc's n' a quality beat followed most importantly by balanced mixing n' post production. This track sounds so badly like a Dilated People's track - thats probably why Rakaa n' Iriscience's vocals bless it without a blemish. Lyrically its just fun chat - nothing stressful nothing relevant. Nice flows n' a couple of crisp punches n' mutli's. The beat is based around a slow purposeful break n' brass stab combo. Other orchestral elements flit in and out along with some tidy cutting it makes a more aggressive tune than both the a-side and the original lighthearted LP track.

Nuff said. In case your thick n' dont recognise - I'm feeling this record. A lot!
