 Jehst Alcoholic Author 12"

Here is another quality YNR release - although I should mention they first started out providing eight then dropped to six and now hit with only two tracks + instr n' acca. So dont expect an EP this 12 hit with no remixes or nuttin. The title track 'Alcoholic Author' has juicy harp based Harry Love production who simply makes a beat that granite could flow over. Jehst steps with style n' moves in his own style - sorta semi paranoid whilst coupled towards them psychedelic hippy references. I think his flow is amazing but sometimes his voice feels less powerful than his classy verses deserve - theres times when I wish for more pronounciation n' panache in the delivery stride. Though I must stress this gripe is picky beyond the realms of reason - Jehst is a fuckin bad rapper n' someone who has this much lyrical ability must just frighten allcomers. Its time for this head to gain propers from a worldwide audience n' verbals like this aint gonna harm that chance to break national boundaries - quality is quality n' can be heard by all.

The b-side titled 'Nightbreed' features Jehst n' a couple of mates - the first is Kyza who I'd heard rip it on the Trilogy remix, the second is Richochet Klashnekoff who gave the strongest performance on last summers Wordlab 2. So who won out of three? Its a difficult one to seperate - a split judges decision. All three move with the style - Kyza is decisive n' strong, Jehst has the clear clever wordplay n' Richochet oozes his flows out the easiest. Together they make a quality team n' the track is much the better for every appearance - nobody steps weak. The beat is a Jehst production n' isnt as subtle as Love's beat - simply based around a short break n' bass stab. Theres not much variation within the beat and although this allows you to appreciate the lyricism its not ideal for making the whole track grab your attention.

Overall a solid 12 but doesnt stand up to other Jehst solo releases - if your a fan then its worth collecting it up. If your a first timer then check for his High Plains Drifter n' Preminitions EP's for a better introduction to the geezers undoubted talent.
